Our 2002 Russian River Valley Pinot Noir was made from fruit grown on the Del Rio Ranch owned by the Louis Martini Winery. It made a delicious wine, but the vineyard was sold to Gallo and wasn’t made available to us after that first year. We loved the bright, rich fruit that has become associated with the Russian River Valley, but circumstances kept Coho from making another wine from there until the 2007 vintage.
Fog and cool wind are also the main climatic factors affecting the character of wines made from Russian River Valley fruit. However this weather comes rolling in directly from the Pacific Ocean often leading to a 35-50 degree temperature swing each day-night. This natural air-conditioning allows the grapes to develop full flavor maturity over an extended growing season while retaining their life-giving natural acidity.
Since 2008 COHO has been purchasing small lots from select vineyards in the Green Valley sub-appellation of the Russian River Valley. Situated in the southwest part of the larger appellation, Green Valley is the coolest, foggiest region of the Russian River Valley. This tends to expose the fruit to the longest ripening period which results in dense, complex Pinot Noir, rich in bright fruit flavors with crisp, lively acidity.
